Classes Across East Anglia

Train with us

Systema is a martial art built on freedom in application rather than fixed techniques. The work is adapted to the individual: understanding yourself, making use of your own strengths and attributes, and identifying and improving the weaker areas. East Anglia Systema currently offers three weekly classes across Cambridge, Stevenage and Wrestlingworth. Classes are welcoming, mixed-ability and open to adults of all ages and experience levels.

Some students have never trained a martial art before. Others have decades of experience. Everyone trains together. Your first class is free.

Class in mid-session at the Wrestlingworth hall

What to expect

A typical class begins with breathing and movement exercises designed to help students relax, become more aware of their bodies and prepare for training. From there, students explore different aspects of Systema, including breath, structure, movement, balance, falling and recovery, striking, self-defence and partner work.

Training is cooperative rather than competitive. Students help each other learn. The atmosphere is focused, friendly and respectful. Most people leave feeling energised rather than exhausted.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need experience?

No. Many students begin with no previous martial arts experience. Everything is taught progressively.

Do I need to be fit?

No. Training is adapted to the individual. You work at a pace appropriate for your current level of fitness and mobility.

Is Systema aggressive?

No. The emphasis is on awareness, relaxation and appropriate action. Students learn practical self-defence skills in a supportive environment.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothing you can move in. Long sleeves and trousers are recommended. Bring a bottle of water.

Am I too old to start?

Almost certainly not. The age of our students varies widely, from university students to those who have retired. The work adapts to the individual rather than requiring the individual to adapt to the work.

Why weekly training matters

Seminars can be inspiring. Books and videos can be informative. Real progress comes from regular practice. Weekly training allows students to gradually develop better breathing, healthier movement, greater confidence and a deeper understanding of Systema principles. The benefits accumulate over time.
